Short Term Gratification v Life Long Values

Perhaps more than ever before, mothers are faced with the difficult problem of materialism. Today’s world has created a ‘must have’ environment, with many children not understanding the true cost of the things they want. With new versions of their cell phone, MP3 player, and gaming systems coming out ever six months, and peers who seem to have it all, some of today’s children are downright demanding of their parents and the material items they want. As parents, we must learn to tread this line delicately and make healthy decisions for our children and our family.

The first step may seem obvious to some, but many still struggle with it. You only have so much money. As such, you need to develop a budget for your children. Don’t make the mistake of buying the latest toy on credit just to appease a child. If you cannot afford the item, your child doesn’t need it. Develop a budget and stick to it.

The next part isn’t as easy – explaining to the kids just why they can’t have a $450 cell phone (or other item). Helping them understand the value of money is part of it, but the greater issue is the underlying belief that happiness, popularity, and friends are found in what you have. Each child is different, but the most successful parents start this training during the toddler years and never let it go.

You want to give your child everything, but that doesn’t mean buying them every new toy. Instead, instill in them the concept of saving and of the value of money. Those things will have a life long impact, while a toy will only last a few months.
